According to Al Shay* of DeSantis Landscapes, Fall is a perfect time to end the Summer season with a flourish. “We tend to forget that Nature continues to do her thing after Labor Day,” says Al, “Most people would be amazed by the return they realize in their landscape’s beauty with a little effort in the Fall. At DeSantis, we have a wide variety of services and programs that can help people realize huge returns year-round with a nominal investment in the Fall months.”
This lawn, maintained by DeSantis Landscapes almost swaggers in its August green. As amazing as it might seem, this beautiful and robust 41/2-acre garden spot hasn’t seen a drop of synthetic fertilizer or pesticide in two years. The Fall Flourish Checklist
These are a few of the things you might consider in the coming months:
• Lawn care: Many folks will notice their lawns coming back now that the weather has cooled and we’ve had a little rain. Now that the heat has abated, your lawn WILL recover and continue to grow over the next several months. Revitalizing your lawn now, by aerating, de-thatching, top-dressing and over-seeding will yield a lush and drought resistant lawn for next summer. • Irrigation: Now that constant watering is not a priority, we can revisit your irrigation system to replace damaged sprinkler heads, zone watering volumes, drip irrigation options and more sophisticated controls that keep your lawn in top condition and conserve water.
• Flowering perennials: This is a great time to plant Fall perennials, and to realize constant color through Fall and into the Winter months. We live in a Mediterranean climate that supports a wide variety of flowering perennials including Asters, Sedums, Chrysanthemums, Kirengeshoma (Yellow Wax Bells), Heliopsis and many others.
Chrysanthemums pictured here are just one of the many flowering perennials we can help you identify and locate to bring color and vibrancy to your landscape even as Winter is upon us. Click here to learn more about our design and consulting services, or call us for a Fall Color Consultation.
• Mulch and compost flower beds: Conditioning your flower beds with mulch and compost will re-introduce micro-nutrients to the soil, build tilth and increase water retention.
• Bulbs and winter annuals: As you select your flowering bulbs to plant this fall, keep in mind that larger caliber bulbs give big, showy displays, but cost more. Smaller caliber bulbs usually are less expensive, with a smaller show, but are great for brightening nooks and crannies in your yard.
This is just one landscape maintained by DeSantis that has benefited from a phased approach to design, build and installation. Many of the constructed features found here were installed in the Fall when the weather was mild and the lawn was not intensely used. Autumn Opportunity
Fall is the perfect time to look at your whole landscape, and to create the landscape you really want.” says Al Shay, “We can help our customers in so many ways it’s mind boggling. A visit from one of our landscape professionals to discuss your needs and wants might be the best first step.” DeSantis will work with you to create a “shopping” list of Fall landscape maintenance and enhancement steps that you can act on as your interests and budget allow. As Dean DeSantis points out, “Fall is a great time to take an unhurried look into the future." A little effort in the Fall can help people to realize surprising benefits including pockets of vibrant color from flowering perennials, reduced water and fertilizer use and a more functional and self-sustaining landscape. To realize all the opportunities of autumn, click here to contact DeSantis today.
Dear DeSantis Landscapes:
The yard is looking great and has gotten a lot of use this summer. It has been host to the annual July fourth BBQ. The patio is in the perfect spot now and every inch was used that day. There have also been several camp outs held in the back yard as well as football, baseball, and a rather cut-throat croquet game.
The garden has grown like gang busters all summer. Jackson used his dump truck to personally fill all the beds with compost and then helped plant all the seeds... The first thing I do everyday when I come home from work or after breakfast on my days off is walk through the yard. It is also the last thing I do at night before it gets too dark... Thank you again so much for helping us have a yard that is so relaxing, fun and productive all at the same time! I hope everyone there had a great summer and are still enjoying what they do. Jackson still talks about the "guys" all the time and gets excited whenever we happen to see a DeSantis truck!
Thanks again,
Jodi Kroon
